Justice minister nominee Ahn Kyong-whan resigns from nomination

We turn to the ongoing dispute at the National
Assembly over President Moon’s picks for top government jobs. Mired in the loudest controversies in the
eyes of the main opposition party,… the justice minister nominee fell on his sword,…
withdrawing himself from consideration late last night. Park Ji-won has the details. The nation’s justice minister candidate Ahn
Kyong-whan has resigned from his nomination Friday evening. The decision came soon after the presidential
office announced that if a critical flaw is found in his credentials, then it could drop
Ahn’s nomination. In his statement, Ahn said he stepped down
from the nomination,… in order to not hinder the Moon administration’s prosecutorial reform
agenda. For the past few days since he was nominated
for justice minister,… Korea’s opposition parties were demanding Ahn’s voluntary resignation
and apology,… as his previously-published books contain many derogatory comments on
women, Another major issue was that some 40 years
ago, Ahn registered a marriage license without his partner’s consent by forging her seal,…
eventually leading to nullification of the marriage certificate a year later. The former justice minister nominee said he
was blinded by selfishness back then,… and has regretted the incident ever since. Meanwhile, foreign minister candidate Kang
Kyung-wha is also facing uncertainties in her nomination. Opposition lawmakers have objected to Kang’s
nomination over a number of allegations, including the registration of a false address for her
daughter, as well as tax evasion. However, President Moon Jae-in hinted on Thursday
that if the parliament doesn’t meet the new deadline to issue a report on Kang’s confirmation
hearing, he will appoint her,…a renowned career-diplomat,… as the next foreign minister,….
whether the opposition parties approve her appointment OR NOT. Park Ji-won, Arirang News.
