SAVE Family-Friendly Content on YouTube

  • This whole thing is a mess. As a libertarian, I want LESS government. However, I would be totally fine with someone stepping in to protect the kids ON YouTube. Do child labor laws apply to the children getting their childhood ripped away and upload for millions of ppl to see? I can’t even tell you how many disgusting clickbait vlogs I’ve seen over the years: Lice outbreak! Our kids smell like cheese! My daughter’s prolapsed rectum!! It’s insane! Or what about all the injuries, naked clips, POTTY TRAINING! Some of these kids are going to need major counseling in 20 years. And for what….an abundance of toys, parents buying sports cars and mansions. What’s being put aside for college funds? When YT does decide to start cracking down, it’s going to be those KIDS that are going to be hurt the most.

*Nothing personal towards your channel! This is mostly directed at the β€œteen mom” crew. Ppl that would use anything and everything to get views, even if it potentially harms their kids. A few years ago YT had a problem with pedophile’s watching and saving family content. On 3 different occasions, I reached out to the YT’ers to let them know they missed a clip while editing…not ONE of them went back and removed the clip of their FULLY naked CHILD. I think that’s a little more important than what freaking ads kids happen to see.

Do you know if any laws that protect child creators? Thank you for you insight! I signed the petition. Everyone laughed when they were banning conservatives, but that was just the beginning. They won’t be happy until all social media sites fit their agenda.

  • So for some reason, I cannot write comment – so here is mine. Could you submit it for me?

"As a youtube content creator, who reaches millions of people every month, I am VERY concerned about this, for many different reasons.

First of all – if you are even going to consider, giving a fine up to $42,000 to a creator, who claims his video is not "child-directed" and you guys conclude, that it is "child-directed" You need to make it CRYSTAL clear, to creators, and to everyone else, what "Child-Directed" means. Because at the moment, it is very unclear what "Child-Directed" means, to not only creators but to pretty much anyone who reads your vague guidelines.

You talk about many different ways to determine if the content is "Directed to children under 13" There are so many issues with almost, every single point you bring up. But I am going to focus on one point, that is directly related to me because it not only is a great example, showing how vague these guidelines really are, but it also shows, how there is a fundamental problem with this particular guideline.

I am an animation youtube channel – you say "the use of animated characters or other child-oriented activities and incentives" is a sign that the video, is directed at children. I'm honestly not trying to be rude, but the vagueness here is absurd. There are literally, thousands of animation styles, that are completely different one another, and the notion that "Animation = Children's Content" is fundamentally incorrect, here's why:

    1) Every one of my videos, is animated, and 95% of my audience, is over the age of 18. (this is based on views, and subscribers) My personal case study alone, shows that the notion of "Animation = Children's Content" is fundamentally incorrect, but here are some more examples.

    2) Here are some other animation channels, that are geared toward kids older than 13: Pursuit of Wonder, After Skool, Improvement Pill, Primed, illacertus, red pill psychology, FightMediocrity, get better together, kurzgesagt (this channel has over 10 million followers)

Are there animated channels on Youtube, that are directed at kids? Yes. Are there animated channels on Youtube, that are NOT directed at kids? Yes, I'd be happy to send you my analytics if you want clear, undeniable proof.

There is also the issue, that kids and adults watch the same animated content "Thedd1sout" is a youtube channel with over 14 million followers, people of all ages watch this channel. So what happens to them? If you need proof, I'm sure he would be willing to show you his analytics.

The part that I am shocked at, is how you have brazenly stated, that you are willing to fine a creator (in my case, an animation creator) up to $42,000 when you have not even done the most basic research, to understand who you are giving the fine to. You guys are attempting to police and govern something, that you shown you don't even know much about, or maybe you do, and you just are being REALLY vague, which is even more shocking, because you are willing to fine us, up to $42,000 without giving us the tools to protect ourselves. Getting a fine like that, could tear a family apart, ruin a future child's college tuition, a family may not be able to pay their medical bills. Some people save up for years, to get money like that…

The fact that you stated "the use of animated characters or other child-oriented activities and incentives" clearly shows, that you are not really in touch, with what adults and kids are watching (at least in the animation space) yet you are trying to police and control what kids should watch and not watch – do you see the problem here? (Again, I know this is coming off as very aggressive, but I feel like this my duty as a content creator to show the issues here)

It's very clear, that no one at the FTC creates content for YouTube, nor did they really talk to creators before they put these policies in place because if you did, you would see the glaring issues here.

There are so many more problems that I don't have time to write about (I am almost out of space)

I really hope all this works out, and again – I am not trying to be rude, or mean, I am just laying out the problems that I see.

    Thanks for reading.

  • It feels like really good creators with good, wholesome content are being punished. Well, it’s these family friendly creators that make my days better and tolerable. Cutting their funding is promoting the junk others put out there and make a killing off of. YouTube, your priorities sure are screwed up these days.

  • Every day l come home and the thing that make me get my homework to watch my favorite youtube families so i say a big fat no πŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘Ž please don't please 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭don't get rid of family because of what ever if you do i would be the πŸ˜₯ person because it spice in your life

  • my little brothers watch youtube and some adds scare them so iam ok with family frendly on youtube sorry iam bad at spelling it after school hours

  • I feel this is so unfair all thought family's hard work put into their channels and time and even money put in to buying equipment it could have been years of work I just don't understand why they would do this to thought people just please don't delete their content it would break to many hearts and schools and stuff even work, churches anywhere could use school work science, math history any thing it could effect so much just imagine how much that would effect people just think about….

  • youtube in some countries don't care what kind of advertisements that show to the kids. I saw hair wax adv in some kids videos !!! rap with f word adv and a lot of adv not appropriate for kids. I wish if they remove it

  • There are a lot of issues with this so-called β€œfamily friendly” content. If you remember seeing any of these channels before November 2017, noticeably Tannerites (YAWI vlogs) and Obama Adventure, all of their videos were about bad things happening, like flu shot freak outs, getting injured, getting bullied at school, and other personal things that are none of our business and we should not see.

And Tannerites still continue to upload videos about their daughter getting her phone taken away and other things that are way too personal. I get the impression that the parents are not approachable off camera at all and I honestly seriously wonder if they are ever given the opportunity to have a private, off-camera talk with them. Same goes for 8Passengers, where the mom is clearly addicted to being on camera and is forgetting her kid’s appointments and responsibilities due to vlogging. Two of kids even got pulled out of school because they didn’t get their shots in time and mom had to rush to make an appointment so they could go back.

Nonetheless, not all channels are bad. I don’t get this bad impression at all from you, J house. I’ve seen some of your content and from before November 2017 and I don’t recall seeing anything that I would consider a serious breach of your kids privacy or something that they would get bullied in school over. Another good genuine channel, we are the davises, also doesn’t have any of this type of content, and Kayla (daughter) is the happiest person I’ve ever seen in my life and it is obvious that she is not being exploited. Once again, no overly personal/ exploitative content on their channel. It is apparent that this is something Kayla and her mom enjoy doing together and creates a bond between the two of them.

The unfortunate reality is that although some of these channels have a true genuine impact, about 80% or more are about the parents exploiting their kids so they don’t have to work, their so called β€œdream.” This exploitation mainly consisted of doctor freakouts/ shots (which basically started this whole mess), bad personal stories, too much personal, child to parent talk that OBVIOUSLY should be OFF CAMERA, and disciplining their children for the entertainment of the viewer, characteristic of Tannerites (YAWI vlogs)

While this FTC regulation will impact some genuine vloggers including you that are truly not in it to make a quick buck and do it out of joy and family bonding, the harsh reality is that family vlogging does more harm than good. It ruins kids lives, makes them wonder if their parents are really their parents or their slave masters (these children aren’t getting paid!) , and makes them wonder if a video their parents post is going to cause them to get bullied at school. For that reason, I have to support the FTC regulation and it is regretful that a handful of genuine families will be affected.

  • This is wrong I will force people to make this stop and save family friendly content!!!πŸ™πŸΎπŸ™πŸΎ

  • Hey! Have I finally found someone who can answer my question!?! I live in Cyprus and YouTube does not moneterize here (YouTubes choice/not Cyprus decision). Note that Cyprus is in Europe. I never get any answer back form anyone, as to why. (My channel is about my everyday life living in a rural area in Cyprus/farming/showing local wildlife etc – no children and not a family channel). Please be the person who finally answers my channel! Thanks in advance!
    Sending you all the best.

  • Wait, I just realized that YouTube wants to demonetize mature content to protect brand safety, and the FTC wants YouTube to demonetize family friendly content to protect children. So, will YouTube just collapse if this doesn't change, then? This doesn't seem like a sustainable ecosystem for content creators as a business.

  • When I come home from school I love to lie down on my bed and watch YouTube that is appropriate for me! In my opinion it IS HORRIBLE FTC is doing this

  • I don't want to curse in my content but I may just start adding a word here and there. If that's what I need to do.
