Community Engagement P.h.D. Students Volunteer at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

Working with the Food Bank at our first
activity in cohort for the Point Park P.h.D. program was pretty amazing we learned a lot about people when you see them serve when you see how they interact with people that they don’t know. There were people out there who really seemed very grateful just that we were present
and wanted to do something to help somebody else and people express that to us and so it was very rewarding. What excites me the most about the community
engagement doctoral programs is the real social lab aspect of the program so
rather than just learning about community engagement and researching it
the students in the program are really going to be engrained in the community
here in the city of Pittsburgh. Working at the food bank was so much fun having
them work together and talk about their careers and engagement that they’ve
already done and the excitement that they feel about the engagement they’re
about to do. It’s enthusiastic. I am excited to be here and I think it’s a
great start that we’re starting off the program by giving back. I am aware of the food bank and it’s
services but I had never had an opportunity to volunteer and to be there and to see the difference they feed the hunger was really humbling to know that our
region has resources like the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank that are available to help people and really made you feel thankful and appreciative for the things that you have. Right now these people are feeling lots of different roles and that was really our goal in selecting this years cohort. We kept the cohort small so we only have 14 students coming in and we wanted them to be from really diverse backgrounds so we have people who are
already leaders and all of those people are going to be in the same room
together every week putting their heads together to solve community issues and I
think anybody who want to learn how to better serve their community in a truly
academic research oriented way this is an amazing P.h.D. program
