Faculty and Staff Recognition Award Ceremony

Faculty and Staff Recognition Award Ceremony

(light upbeat music) – I think Purchase is
a really unique place to learn and grow. I think it’s a really good place for intergenerational
members of the community. I think that these awards
are a really special thing. When they were saying all of the qualities that the person who was winning it had, I was thinking of several of my colleagues who I thought could win it, so it’s really special to me, because I think there are
so many amazing people here, and there’s so many people
who could have been awarded, and the fact that it was
me, was really amazing. (light upbeat music) – The most rewarding part of
working at Purchase for me, has got to be working
directly with the students. Watching them come into campus, and then helping them
succeed, develop, grow, and ultimately graduate is remarkable. Well, I just want to show this award. It’s really cool. I just want to thank
the Professional Council for this really large,
pointy, and heavy award. It means a lot to me, so thanks. – Hands down the best part of working at Purchase are students. It has been the single
thing that has kept me here over the years. I’m here for the students, will always be here for the students, and look forward to
working with the students for many years to come. To be recognized by my
peers, and nominated, and granted this award by the Chancellor, is a nice way of finding out that it’s actually been noticed. It’s not that I wouldn’t be
doing all this stuff without it, but the truth of the matter is, it’s nice to get that kind of
recognition when it happens. – I always think that it
attracts people who are kind of very creative of course, but intellectually grounded,
and one of the things that I do in advising is try to help them kind of narrow their path. So being honored with the
Student Engagement Award means quite a bit to me. There’s certainly so
many people, and so many of them are so deserving of this award, so it’s a great honor to be able to sort of highlight my experiences and share them with others also, is a great reward. (light upbeat music) – So to be honored with
the Bridge Builder Award means a lot to me. When I first came onto campus, I sat through the Professional
Staff Council Awards, and saw Daisy won the Rising Star Award, and it was almost a goal of mine to try and achieve something like this, so to receive it in the
following year meant a lot to me. – I love my colleagues, and
I love the students here, I think this place kind
of at its best reinforces that when people are in need, this idea that every person is for themselves is simply not sustainable, and I think the culture of
Purchase really enforces that ideal. I think that the Guiding Light
Award is about mentorship, and I think we have to understand that mentorship stems beyond
the student’s time at Purchase, and I think acknowledging that mentorship and advising doesn’t end after Purchase is a really
important part of that. – My name is Maria Durand. I working for facility
manager for five years. (speaking Spanish) – One other thing that is
really great about working at Purchase is the vast
diversity of sexualities and queer life at Purchase, and I have found that to
be really invigorating to my everyday life, to my
personal life, to my classroom, and that’s really exciting about Purchase, because it enables students
to explore and be part of those worlds. So this year, I was promoted to the title of distinguished professor,
and I was able to travel to Albany and meet the Chancellor, and it gave me a sense of the
vast diversity of the types of intellectual and creative pursuits that people at SUNY do. – I’m working for people. I’m people oriented person. I am technical person at the same time, I love people very much and
I try to make them happy to comfortable working for this college. You have to do everything
that you can do for people, for students, for faculty and staff. What I am doing now,
scientific technician, and I am so happy of course. – The most rewarding
aspect is the interactions with the students that I get. They’re cool, creative, and
very kind, and respectful to the staff and faculty. I love that there’s something
always going on here, whether it’s an art exhibit
or a musical performance, and that it’s really brimming
with creativity all over. It means a great deal. It means that amongst many of
my colleagues and coworkers, that they appreciate the work that I do, which I try to do the best that I can. – What I love about Purchase the most, I think is the energy. The energy of everybody
really on the the campus. There’s a lot of enthusiasm,
a lot of eagerness to learn, and to work with people. Getting this award means a lot to me. First of all, I really appreciate that my colleagues
submitted me for this award. It also reflects that the whole of the college respects the work that I do as being open to customers,
helping everybody at the college. (light upbeat music)
