Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) at UVM

(bright music) – So I always really knew
that I wanted to help people, but I wasn’t really sure
what that meant for me and the College of Education
and Social Services was very supportive to make me
feel comfortable and welcome. And I liked how Human
Development kind of touched on a lot of different aspects
of the helping professions. There is so much to
enjoy about this campus and about Burlington. Once you get to know people and the corners of the university it just shrinks and shrinks and shrinks. So you’re in this big
hustle bustle environment, but you’re also kind of
experiencing those relationships that you don’t get in a
larger school setting. I love the camaraderie of we’re all here, we’re all UVM kids, we all
understand this culture, and we all get to really interact in this beautiful, beautiful space. Human Development students
love collaborating and working together. There aren’t a lot of
us, a lot of the classes you’re kind of seeing a
lot of familiar faces. It just helps to really
foster a comfortable and supportive learning environment. In the very first year of college, I got the opportunity to intern at the King Street Children’s Center. It was great for me to kind of see the children of Burlington and how it kind of all fits into this ecosystem. In my senior year, I interned
at the Sara Holbrook Center which is a really great
after school program that focuses on social development and I’ve been able to work
with middle school students, high school students, and
some of them I even recognize from that first internship and I think that has really changed me
in the way of being able to apply my learning
in a real life setting. I actually started my own club which is the Human Trafficking
Activism and Awareness Club. And this has been a really,
really amazing platform for me and my fellow
activists to just feel like we’re really making a difference, both here on campus and
in the greater community. My long term goal is
to really be a big part of social change, social justice, and I think that this program gives people the confidence that they
need to really do that. I couldn’t have stumbled
upon a greater program and a better institution that
fits for me so perfectly. I made a really great choice. (bright music)
