Lehi Gives His Family a Final Blessing | 2 Nephi 1–4 | Book of Mormon

What are you doing? Joseph, the Lord has commanded
me to make plates of ore for the instruction
of our people. Nephi, Jacob,
everyone come. Your father wishes
to speak to you. I have seen a vision, in which I know that
Jerusalem is destroyed; and had we remained in Jerusalem
we should also have perished. Notwithstanding
our afflictions, we have obtained
a land of promise, a land which is choice
above all other lands. Wherefore, this land
is consecrated unto him whom the
Lord shall bring. And if they shall keep
His commandments they shall be blessed
upon the face of this land. But behold,
when the time cometh that they shall
dwindle in unbelief, after they have received
great blessings from the Lord— if the day shall come that they
will reject the Holy One of Israel, the true Messiah, their Redeemer and their God, behold, the judgments
of Him that is just shall rest upon them. -Father doesn’t know
what he’s saying. -Awake! and arise
from the dust, and hear the words
of a trembling parent. My heart hath been
weighed down with sorrow, for I have feared, lest for
the hardness of your hearts that the Lord your
God should come out in the fulness of
His wrath upon you, that ye be cut off and destroyed forever. Rebel no more
against your brother, whose views have been glorious, and who hath been an instrument in the hands of God, in bringing us forth
into the land of promise; for were it not for him, we must have perished
with hunger in the wilderness; nevertheless, ye sought
to take away his life; yea, and he hath suffered
much sorrow because of you. If ye will not hearken unto him I take away my first blessing, and it shall rest upon him. And now, Jacob. Father? I speak unto you: Thou art my firstborn in the days of my
tribulation in the wilderness. Thou knowest the
greatness of God; and He shall consecrate
thine afflictions for thy gain. I know that thou art redeemed, because of the righteousness
of thy Redeemer. Thou hast beheld in thy youth
His glory; and the Spirit is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. The way is prepared
from the fall of man, and salvation is free. Men are instructed sufficiently that they know good from evil. By the temporal law
they were cut off; by the spiritual law they perish from
that which is good, and they become miserable forever. Wherefore, redemption cometh in and through the Holy Messiah; for He is full of grace and truth. Behold, He offereth Himself
a sacrifice for sin, to answer the ends of the law, unto all those who
have a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Wherefore, how great the importance
to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth. Jacob, there is no flesh that can
dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down His life
according to the flesh, and taketh it again by
the power of the Spirit, that He may bring to pass
the resurrection of the dead, being the first that should rise. For it must needs be, that there is an
opposition in all things. But Father, why? If not so, righteousness could not
be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. The Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself. According to the things
which I have read, an angel of God had
fallen from heaven; wherefore, he became a devil, having sought that
which was evil before God. And because he had
fallen from heaven, and had become
miserable forever, he sought also the
misery of all mankind. Wherefore, he said unto Eve: Partake of the forbidden fruit, and ye shall not die,
but ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil. After Adam and Eve had
partaken of the forbidden fruit they were driven out
of the garden of Eden, to till the earth. And they have
brought forth children. Tell them why this had to be. If Adam had not transgressed he would not have fallen, but he would have remained
in the garden of Eden. And they would have
had no children; wherefore they would have
remained in a state of innocence, having no joy,
for they knew no misery; doing no good,
for they knew no sin. Adam fell that men might be; and men are,
that they might have joy. And the Messiah cometh
in the fulness of time, that He may redeem
the children of men from the fall. Wherefore, men are free
according to the flesh. And they are free to choose
liberty and eternal life, through the great
Mediator of all men, or to choose
captivity and death, according to the captivity
and power of the devil. My sons, I would that ye should
look to the great Mediator, and be faithful
unto His words, and choose eternal life, according to the will
of His Holy Spirit. Joseph … I now speak unto you,
Joseph, my last-born. Thou art the fruit of my loins; and I am a descendant of Joseph who was carried
captive into Egypt. Who could interpret
dreams for Pharaoh! Yes, and you share his name. Joseph truly said: Thus saith the Lord unto me: A choice seer will I raise up out of the fruit of thy loins. And he shall be great
like unto Moses. And unto him will I give power to bring forth my word unto the seed of thy loins. And thus prophesied
Joseph, saying: His name shall be
called after me; and it shall be the
name of his father. And by the power of the Lord he shall bring my
people unto salvation. Laman, Lemuel, I desire to speak to your children. My sons and my daughters, I cannot go down to my grave save I should leave a
blessing upon you; for behold, I know that if ye are
brought up in the way ye should go ye will not depart from it. Wherefore, because of my blessing the Lord God will not
suffer that ye shall perish; wherefore, He will be
merciful unto you and unto your seed forever. Thou shalt not
utterly be destroyed; but in the end thy seed shall be blessed.

  • What a beautiful portrayal of this touching scene regarding his blessing upon his children and his grand children. His blessings have all come true and are still coming true. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints we also have a patriarchal blessings that if we will heed them and listen to them we also will be blessed.

  • "Look to the Great Mediator." I love this! How could any sincere seeker of truth deny that this Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ?

  • Just because the word of God comes to men in such a simple way.. Men reject it.. But seeing an angel didn't made much of a difference either..

  • Aww, I was looking forward to Lehi speaking to Zoram! But the acting in this episode was phenomenal, and the Spirit was strong. Loved it!

  • Laman and Lemuel's up and down faithfulness. After Lehi blesses their children, they looked happy. After the funeral though, they immediately went back to rebellion mode.

  • I love the videos. Soon as I told my manager I was going to take my break, I came running to the break room to watch the next video. How moving this was. As I watched Lehi, he made me think of President Nelson teaching his grandchildren. I loved how they portrayed the children, the grandchildren, and Lehi himself.

I saw loved the moment where Sariah handed the Liahona to Nephi as if to represent a change in leadership. That’s when Lamen stormed away because as we all know, he thinks he should have the right. Sorry man but you forfeited that right when you rebelled against the Lord.

  • C’mon, Church, make this beautiful series available in high definition Blu Ray. And for that matter, the Life of Christ videos as well.

  • If we believe in blessings under the hands of fathers and leaders and we use that form always, why not evidence it here?
The Old Testament evidences the "laying on of hands"… Sad it's not depicted here.
More so, you give the impression JACOB was the only one blessed that day.. depictions herein are very disappointing, VERY!!!

  • I love the look of resentment on Laman and Lemuel and their families' faces when Sariah gave Nephi the liahona. By inheriting the Liahona, Nephi is now officially recognized as the spiritual leader over the whole family. That was the last straw for Laman and Lemuel, who thought that because they were older and bigger and stronger they should lead. But by seeking for that instead of the kingdom of God, they lost it all.

  • What a powerful moment when Lehi was talking to his son Joseph and I was reminded when Lehi was reading that scriptures that he was talking about Joseph Smith Jr also 😮

Edit: and it shall be the name of his father (Joseph Smith Sr.) That will bring people unto salvation through the restoration of the gospel.

  • After, Lehi's gives the blessing to his son's. The grand children hugged him which probably wasn't scripted. I love
    the Book of Mormon video's.

  • When Laman made that look after Nephi received the Liahona, that was his defining moment when he made up his mind and turned on the family. No longer would he obey the Lord or his prophets. He chose his side, and took others with him.

The thousand-year conflict between the Nephites and Lamanites is about to begin.

  • 8:05 – Tad R. Callister identified this as one of the most important doctrines corrected in the Book of Mormon –
The garden of Eden is not the end goal which we are trying to get back to to undo the foolishness of our first parents, but rather, it was the launching off point for God's entire plan, a plan in which Adam and Eve played a vital role.

Because of them, we exist, and as they were taught, we can all come back to the Father through the Atonement of Christ.

I'm so thankful for Adam and Eve, and this passage of scripture!

  • A true patriarchal blessing is always by the father or family elder.Every messiah, Emmanuel, and Christ was meant to be accepted, if a true one, but the idea of only one is literally against The Bible.

  • Can’t say enough how much I love these videos, they’ve been a long time coming. I’m just glad they are made now

  • Wonderful! Thank you for making this video to share the incredible truths and doctrine in the Book or Mormon. I wish I could "like" it a thousand times.

  • Thank you so much. This video is a treasure. This part of the Book of Mormon is so powerful and important to me and you have captured it in a wonderful way. Thank you, thank you.

  • So much wisdom here. I'm going to have to watch it again to take it all in. Man, it's sad when Lehi dies. Great episode.

  • I always love reading Lehi's final blessing. There's a lot to learn from it, and a lot of doctrine from the Bible is both supported and clarified. Plus you see how desperately he wants all his family to be righteous so they can all receive the blessings that come with it. And it was kind if the family's moment of truth: they chose either to be righteous and accept whomever the Lord has chosen to lead, or be angry with it and leave, which is still a choice we have to make today. This is one of my favorite parts of the Book of Mormon.

  • Powerful & beautifully moving. It feels as though you were there witnessing Lehi's testimony & blessing of his family. As I watch each of these episodes 8 see the greatcare that was given to hold true to The Book of Mormon account.

  • The Dramatisation of the Book of Mormon/The Book of Nephi into these videos is so powerful. There is much in this one in particular. For me at this present time, I am in the process of taking the counsel of President Russel M. Nelson. The current Prophet of the Lord Jesus Christ – wherein He, Elder Nelson as asked us to read the Joseph Smith History of the first vision found in the Pearl of Great Price. President Nelson has promised all who do& make a study of it from now until the April conference of 2020 will gain, strengthen, & renew their testimonies of Joseph Smith, Jesus Christ & Heavenly Father. he also promised that all who do this will have a "Wonderful Experience" at next year's General Conference.

So when Lehi called to his son Joseph & told him who he was named after & told him about the further Joseph It rang loud and clear in my Heart & mind about who Joseph Smith is. I have been reading & studying more & more about who he is. & true to President Nelson promise My Testimony is in the process of being renewed, I am gaining more insight & being, strengthen, as to who He, (JS), is, which this video has aided in doing today.

Joseph Ben-Joseph is a name that is applied to Joseph Smith as is Messiah Ben-Joseph which is a Jewish tradition he was also known as Teal the Restorer. as is expressed in these words below.

"In 1955, the Macmillan Company of New York published the English translation of a book by Dr. Joseph Klausner, professor of Hebrew literature and Jewish history at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. the book came under the title of The Messianic Idea in Israel. in this volume, Dr. Klausner devoted one full chapter (Part 111, Chapter9) to the coming of a future "Joseph." dr. Klausner pointed out that one of the most ancient and respected traditions among the Jewish scholars is the prophecy that a "Joseph" should be raised up in the latter days for the specific purpose of preparing the way for the coming Messiah. He cited sources to show that this future Joseph is not only mentioned in the Talmud and other Jewish classics, but Christian scholars have also taken note of this tradition. According to Jewish scholars, this future Joseph was to be killed, some said in battle , but Judah Ibn Shmuel said he would be attacked by "Armilus, who is the "Antichrist" According to tradition this Joseph of the latter days would be a descendant of Joseph who was sold into Egypt and would come through the Line of Ephraim ( Joseph's heir). it also said that his mission would commence about the time Elijah made his appearance to fulfill the promise made in Malachi 4: 5-6. But the thing that puzzled Dr. klausner most was why this tradition of the latter-day Joseph should be so thoroughly established among the Jewish scholars when there was no reference to it in the Hebrew scriptures. the Talmud, the Midrash, and the Targum all refer to it, but these of course, are merely commentaries rather than the scripture itself. furthermore, the Jews are not the only ones who have this tradition. Dr Klausner states that the Samaritans are even more zealous than the Jews in keeping alive the tradition of the latter-day Joseph. some of them claim to be of the tribe of Joseph and therefore this prophecy is important to them. It will be recalled that the ancestors of the Samaritans were a tiny remnant that was successful in escaping the siege of the Assyrians in 721 B.C., and therefore they were not carried off to Mesopotamia with the rest of Israel. their tradition concerning the latter-day Joseph goes back to a period which was long before the Talmud. According to Dr. Klausner, The Samaritans had this to say about the future Joseph: 1. they said he would be a descendant of Joseph Through Ephraim. They sometimes referred to him as a "son of Ephraim." 2. they called him Teal, meaning "The Restorer," "he who returns," or "he who causes to return." [He is a preparer of the way for the Lord, He is an Elias" as was John the Baptist. It is interesting that Peter James and John asked the Saviour if Elias, was this restorer at the mount of Transfiguration. Christ answered no, but said but first, surely the restorer must come. ] 4. they said this Joseph of the Latter-days would "restore everywhere the true Law to its former validity and convert all peoples, especially the Jews to the Samaritan (Ephraimite) religion." Now that a considerable quantity of lost scripture is beginning to be restored by the lord or rediscovered by scholars, it has become readily apparent why both the Jews and the Samaritans would have had a rich well-established tradition concerning a "Joseph" Who was to prepare the way for the Coming of the Messiah."

The above text is taken from Treasures from the Book of Mormon Volume One First Nephi- jacob7 By Cleon Skousen except for words in brackets which are mine.

  • if anyone who ever read the BIBLE (BELIEVERS), would read the B.O.M., they will truly see that it IS true ,and it IS another testimony of Jesus Christ, this video may make some sceptics try to read it again!! I have, many times, and this series prompts me to, again!! thank you for this edifying series,—rick

  • Let us not forget the full orchestra that's always just out of sight of the camera, conducted by Ethan, the unknown son, whose spiritual gift was being able to anticipate, down to the second, whatever was about to occur to the family. He had to be inventive, too. The storm was the hardest thing to accomplish for four days straight, with whole shifts of musicians rotating throughout the days and nights, but he did it. Soon, though, he's going to be stretched out pretty thin, what with Nephi taking off into the wilderness as he does. Imagine the logistics required to transport the orchestra back and forth between the two camps! But Ethan, blessed of the Lord, is up to the task. Let us all take a moment to praise the name of Ethan and his sons. Yay, Ethan!

  • its even more boring than reading the book of mormon! whereas ones imagination can come into play just as the fertile imagination of Mr Joseph Smith lead him along his path.
however if it leads one to ask questions about our existence and a believe in supreme God(s) then perhaps it has some merit!

  • The last video of them coming across the ocean was the worst … acting not great, motivations unclear, reactions confusing… But this, on the other hand, is epic; amazing; wonderful. The guy who played Lehi is perfection! WHAT A GREAT VIDEO! The acting is world-class here! Lehi just stole the show! Absolutely inspiring!

  • The love of a father for his children is so evident in this video. Even though he knew that Laman and Lemuel would rebel against Nephi, he still blessed their children that they would some day be brought to the knowledge of God.

  • In truth it should be noted that….
' The events and characters depicted in this film are fictitious, any similarity to actual persons living or dead , or actual events, is purely coincidental'.
Kind regards to all, especially dear Mormon folk.

  • Sometimes we forget the family setting for Lehi's blessing of his children. Visually, this critical, sacred moment is brought home to us. The text seems so well woven into the scenes in which we observe family members reacting.

  • Such attention to detail in this relatively short video! Notice the reading from Lehi's right to left on the plates of brass, by Lehi. That was the correct direction in which the script on the plates of brass would have been written, which would have been at that time a blending of Hieratic and Demotic Egyptian scripting (themselves actually being reformed scripts of Egyptian). (It is also the same right-to-left direction in which the further modified script of the Book of Mormon plates, which they called "reformed Egyptian," was written–as stated by Joseph Smith.)

  • Lehi saw that Jerusalem was destroyed by the invading Babylonians. It would of been an awesome feeling to see his family and posterity in a free and beautiful land. He was faithful until the end. But remember, he endured many trials and had a few difficult children along the way.
