The Original Addams Family?! | WHAT THEY GOT RIGHT

– Welcome to the show. I’m your host, Samantha, and this is What They Got
Right with The Addams Family. We’ve got a lot on
our plate today, so I’m gonna need a hand. Thank you, Thing. Mmm, disgusting. ♪ Someone’s always
dressed like Wednesday ♪ ♪ When it’s Halloween night ♪ ♪ Talking Addams Family
on “What They Got Right” ♪ The Addams Family is back. And for the first time ever, the morbid bunch is hitting
the big screen in 3D CGI, meaning it’s created
entirely on a computer. So if you see a hand reaching
through the screen to grab you be alarmed, it’s probably Thing. Before settling on
CGI, the 2019 reboot was originally going to be
a stop motion animation, a time-consuming technique
that requires animators to physically move the
characters through every frame. The filmmakers ended up
deciding against stop motion. I mean, just imagine how
many people would be needed to bring Cousin
Itt’s hair to life for just one second
of screen time? Not many people know this, but director Tim Burton
stepped away from directing not one, but two
Addams Family films. The first one he passed up on was the 1991
live-action feature, and the most recent one
is the 2019 version. We’re not totally sure they decided to not
to do either movie, but we’re guessing Wednesday
did something to scare him off. The Addams Family has been
entertaining normal citizens and weirdos alike
for almost 100 years. First introduced in the
1930s as a comic strip, the characters’ personalities
have stayed the same for almost 90 years. But despite how unique and
popular the characters were, they didn’t have
names for 25 years. In fact, creator Charles
Addams never intended for the Addams Family members
to have individual names, which is crazy. If you don’t name everything, what are you doing
with your life? Right, Stephanie? One of the toughest
characters to name was Addams Family
patriarch Gomez. He was almost named Repelli. Thankfully, he wasn’t. Otherwise, he’d sound
like a Harry Potter charm. Repelli! – [Harry] Ugh, that’s
not what I wanted. – [Samantha] One of
the coolest changes to The Addams
Family is that Thing wasn’t always supposed
to be a dismembered hand. Thing was originally
conceived as a whole creature that was too horrible
to see in person. The only part of it
that was tolerable was its human hand. No, no, no, you’re
still beautiful. But in the 1991
live-action feature, they decided to make Thing
a walking hand of its own. And, for the 2019 animated
film, for the first time ever, Thing has its own wardrobe. It wears a watch. And for the next
film, you never know. Thing might wear a hoodie,
have some cool sneakers, or a cool new hairdo. You look good. To some, The Addams Family
is strange and frightening, but in the dark corridors
of their spooky home, Morticia and Gomez
Addams nurture a loving and accepting family, a family whose home we will
revisit for years to come, whether it’s as a casual viewer or as an unwilling participant
in a bizarre experiment.
